Desert Farms offers three varieties: raw, pasteurized and kefir, as well as colostrum and other products like soaps and natural skin care. Currently, 150 retailers across the U.S. carry the milk, including Whole Foods, and it’s sold online. Some stores may carry the milk fresh, but most keep the product frozen.

Keto Certified Desert Farms

With more customers convinced in the curative powers of camel milk, the vision of California-based Desert Farms, Inc. to promote camel milk as the next “super food” is slowly being realized.

Outlandish as it may seem at first pass, some studies have suggested that camel milk could help combat insulin resistance and other metabolic issues, while another study published in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal linked drinking camel milk to lower levels of oxidative stress and improvements in function and motor skills.

Not surprisingly, the bulk of Desert Farms customers are parents of children with autism.

Camel milk as a tonic against disease is nothing new outside the US. In 2006, the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) saw bright prospects for camel dairy products, which could not only provide more food to people in arid and semi-arid areas, but also give nomadic herders a source of income.

“We’re America’s new dairy generation, and we sell camel milk,” says Walid Abdul Wahab, the founder of Desert Farms, the first beverage company producing its own line of camel milk in North America. Wahab wants to provide the U.S. with what he calls a “clean and better dairy alternative” that is already popular in Saudi Arabia, his native country.

Joni & Ida’s Family Farm:

Summer 2010 was the start of camel farming for this Amish-Mennonite family with 8 children. Their 30 acre farm holds 3 camels, some horses, and a chicken-raising business. The two oldest sons have helped milk camels for two years. Joni started camel milking to make a living on and the family loves living this way. Although milking camels is “a lot harder than cows,” they prefer camel milk to cow milk and drink it daily. The best part for Joni and Ida is making a sustainable income on the farm, and seeing good results for children who drink camel milk. He’s currently milking one of the two females and anticipates another calf’s birth in December. All camels are pasture raised and they get grass, alfalfa pellets, and Non-GMO flaxseed.
